Class 2(5) A tanning agent is made by reacting (a) 1 part of a synthetic tannin containing a sulphonic acid group, an aromatic ring system and chemically combined urea, with (b) 1-20 parts of a water-soluble condensation product of at least one compound containing one or more primary and/or secondary amino or amido groups and formaldehyde. Reaction may be effected in the presence of a small amount of formaldehyde. Reactant (a) may be a synthetic tannin as described in Specifications 478,280 or 890,150. The nitrogen-containing component of reactant (b) may be urea, a substituted urea, N,N<SP>1</SP>-ethyleneurea, N,N<SP>1</SP>- propyleneurea, crotonylidene urea, a 5-alkylhexahydro-1,3,5-triazinone-(2), a ureide, melamine, dicyandiamide or butanediol diurethane. Condensation of these nitrogen-containing compounds with formaldehyde is effected in a neutral or weakly alkaline medium and, if desired, in the presence of a bisulphite whereby water-solubilizing sulphonic acid groups are introduced. In examples, a synthetic tannin obtained by condensing phenol sulphonic acid, urea and formaldehyde and condensing the product with formaldehyde and either phenol or 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone is reacted with (1) a urea-formaldehyde condensate, (2) trimethylol melamine, (3) dimethylol dicyandiamide, and (4) dimethylol glyoxalmonoureine. The products are spray-dried.
