Abstract
936,470. Preventing incrustation and corrosion. H. F. A. TOPSOE. Dec. 17, 1959, No. 42955/59. Class 123 (1). In a system for the cathodic anti-corrosion protection of submerged iron parts, e.g. steel sheet piling in quays, harbours, canals &c., sacrificial anodes, made, e.g., of graphite iron, are accommodated in wells or buried vessels formed of water porous ceramic material and located inshore in the neighbourhood of the metal parts it is desired to protect, the wells or vessels being kept at least partially filled with water. As shown in Fig. 1, an anode well 4, formed of porous ceramic rings and located inshore from three to ten metres from the sheet piling 1 it is desired to protect, accommodates a graphite iron anode 1, the well 4 being connected by a narrow plastic tube 6 to the sea below the ebbtide level to effect a certain amount of renewal of sea water. If the expected variations in sea level are small, the desired quantity of water renewal can be obtained by increasing, to the desired amount, the cross-sectional area of the well in the vicinity of the mean sea level. In a modification, Fig. 3, a number of anodes 5 are accommodated in a porous ceramic conduit 9 which communicates with the lower ends of two anode wells 7, 8. The well 7 is partitioned at 12 into two chambers 13, 14, a pump 10 drawing water from the sea through a plastic tube 15 and a strainer 16 delivering it from the chamber 13 into the chamber 14. The ceramic conduit 9 is placed in a trench having a lower layer, e.g. of fine gravel or sand. The well 8 has an overflow pipe 11 leading to the sea.
