Abstract

936,452. Handling nuclear fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX L t d. Feb. 11, 1960 [Feb. 18, 1959], No. 5587/59. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXX] The device described in Specification 936,451 for withdrawing and lowering nuclear fuel elements in a reactor is provided with safety catch gear which prevents the fuel elements falling back into the reactor in the event of the hoisting cable 14 breaking. The fuel elements are suspended from a rod 16 connected to the cable 14 by a cylindrical block 44, a pair of arms 45 and a rod 31 which is slidably mounted in a sleeve 43, and carries a block 33 engaging toggle links 37 which bear on a pair of brake shoes 39 urged together by tension springs 40. During normal operation of the device block 33 bears against the bottom of sleeve 43 under the action of the weight of the fuel elements thereby maintaining a spring 41 in compression. Should the cable 14 break, however, spring 41 expands and, through block 33 and links 37 applies brake shoes 39 to the inside of tube 10 thereby retarding the fall of the fuel elements whereafter the weight of the elements act through rod 31 to increase the force applied to the shoes to arrest the elements. The device is provided with a telescopic gascooled sealing chamber 21, 22 which is lowered over a stand pipe on the reactor by rotating a worm driven nut 23, and a ring 18 which, when rotated, rotates a spanner sleeve 21 which unscrews the plug on a stand pipe (not shown) and supports the plug and elements during raising and lowering operations.
