Abstract

[Also in Groups XXII and XXXII] A resilient packing between opposed surfaces of sheet metal is produced by positioning between the surfaces a strip of plastically deformable bonding material embodying a swelling or foaming agent, the strip being adapted to be expanded and transformed from the plastic to the elastic state by curing, and then curing the strip to expand and bond it in situ to one or both of the surfaces. If one surface is to remain unbonded it is first treated with a parting agent, e.g. oil, grease or talc. The bonding material may be a vulcanizable rubber. Sheet metal structures may be secured to one another, e.g. by welding, at points spaced from one another, e.g. at the extremities of their surfaces, and have resilient packing formed by the above method extending substantially between these points. The resilient packing may be a strip disposed in a U-shaped recess in one of the sheets. When a structure such as a motor-vehicle body is being built and provided with resilient packing by the above method, the vulcanization may take place during the heating of the structure for another purpose, e.g. after painting.
