Abstract

936,291. Knitting-machines. HOSIERY & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Dec. 24, 1959 [Sept. 27, 1958], No. 30927/58. Class 74 (2). Positive yarn feed mechanism comprises a positive feed roller 2, to be driven from the machine to which the yarn is fed and having a parallel frictional surface 2a and a smooth surface 2b, a yarn deflector 5 mounted for displacement between positions opposite the two surfaces, and motion transmitting means associated with the yarn deflector for effecting its displacements at required times. When any yarn being fed to a multifeed machine breaks, a feeler 7 supported by it drops, the circuit of a solenoid 17 is opened and a catch 16 allows a disc 18 to rotate under spring influence to operate a stop motion and simultaneously, through a Bowden cable 14, to operate means to move the yarn deflectors 5 to shift all yarns Y being fed by rollers 2 from the parallel parts 2a on to the parts 2b, whereupon yarn feed ceases. The yarn deflectors may be rockable by levers 8, through slots 8a in which the upper ends of the yarn deflectors protrude, and which levers 8 are rocked by the Bowden cable through a lever 12, a ring link 10 and other links 11. Alternatively, the yarn deflectors 5 may be slidable plungers, Fig. 5, biased by springs against the action of cams 29 on a ring 30 which is rotatably displaced by the lever 12. The surface of the part 2a of each feed roller is provided by a sleeve 2g of suitable material and the polished metal tapered or incurved part 2b ends in a neck 2d and a flange 2c. The rollers are driven through gearing including bevel pinions, at least one of which is changeable with others of different size. Each yarn Y passes down through an eyelet 5a of the yarn deflector, round a feed roller, over a U guide of the deflector and through an eyelet 7a of the feeler 7. The disc 18 is rotated, to set the stop motion, when the machine is started, so that a flat 18a on the disc engages a flat 16a on the catch 16, which is swung into engagement therewith by the now energized solenoid 17. The machine may be stopped and re-started in known manner, by the starting or stopping handle, without affecting this setting.
