Abstract

In the preparation of flame-retardant polyurethanes from hydroxyl-containing polymeric compounds a reaction product of a phosphorus oxyhalide and an organic polyhydroxy compound is added to the reactants. The hydroxylcontaining polymeric compounds may be polyesters, polyesteramides or polyethers having at least two hydroxyl groups in the molecule. Organic di- or poly-isocyanates or mixtures thereof may be used. The phosphorus oxyhalide may be reacted with alkylene glycols, glycerol, pentaerythritol and tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine oxide or mixtures thereof. To obtain cellular products the polyurethanes are prepared in the presence of water and/or a low boiling point liquid such as a halogenated hydrocarbon. Additional fireproofing compounds such as tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate and chlorinated paraffin wax may be added. In the examples a condensate of ethylene oxide and octylcresol is also present.ALSO:In the preparation of flame-retardant polyurethanes from hydroxyl-containing polymeric compounds a reaction product of a phosphorus oxyhalide and an organic polyhydroxy compound is added to the reactants. The hydroxyl-containing polymeric compounds may be polyesters, polyesteramides or polyethers having at least two hydroxyl groups in the molecule. Organic di- or poly-isocyanates or mixture thereof may be used. The phosphorus oxyhalide may be reacted with alkylene glycols, glycerol, pentaerythritol and tris(hydroxymethyl)-phosphine oxide or mixtures thereof. To obtain cellular products the polyurethanes are prepared in the presence of water and/or a low boiling point liquid such as a halogenated hydrocarbon.
