Abstract

934,845. Door operating appliances; door holders. J. MURRAY STEEL WORKS PTY. Ltd. May 2, 1962, No. 16893/62. Class 65 (1). A combined door and awning comprises a door panel 10 pivotally connected to the front 17 of a cantilever structure slidably supported above the doorway for movement outwardly or inwardly of the building, the bottom of the door being guided for vertical movement in runways 15 at the sides of the doorway and the effort for opening and raising the door consisting of a horizontal thrust applied outwardly to the top of the door and a simultaneous vertical thrust applied upwardly at the bottom. An operating cable 22 is secured at one end to the bottom of the door, preferably to the bracket which carries the guide rollers 14, and passes over a fixed pulley 25 and a pulley 26 mounted at the rear of the cantilever structure and thence to a winding drum 27 carried by a drive shaft 28. The shaft may be driven either by an electric motor through reduction gearing or by a hand winch connected thereto by a sprocket chain. Preferably two operating cables 22 are provided, one at each side of the door, although a single cable located centrally of the door can be employed. In an alternative arrangement the cable may be anchored at the rear of the cantilever and pass to the drum 27 via the pulley 25 and a pulley fitted at the bottom of the door. The door is intended to close under gravity, the final stage of the closing movement being assisted by a counterweight 35 connected by a cable 32 to the front of the cantilever. Alternatively, the supporting rollers 21 of the cantilever may be so arranged that it inclines downwardly in the closing direction. One or more safety brake devices (Figs. 6, 8) may be fitted to prevent the door from falling in the event of a breakage in cable 22, and each comprises a bell crank 37 pivoted on a fixed pin 38 and carrying a pulley 36 riding on the cable. The bell crank is connected by a link 41 to a brake lever 42 fixed on a shaft 43 carrying a grabber 44 which embraces the top flange 45 of a longitudinal beam 16 of the cantilever. If the cable 22 sags or breaks the pulley 36 falls thereby tilting the grabber, which takes a firm hold on the flange 45 to arrest the cantilever.
