Abstract

934,832. Counterbalancing lift trucks. CLARK EQUIPMENT CO. Oct. 13, 1961 [Nov. 29, 1960], No. 36752/61. Classes 78 (2) and 78 (3). A lift truck, in which a counterweight 12 secured to the frame 15 of the truck balances the load to be lifted, incorporates a counterweight carrying member 26 which can be secured to the frame 15 in either of two discrete positions of adjustment. The member 26 comprises an angle frame which has a horizontal limb 30 secured by bolts 32 to an extension 22 of the frame 15 and a vertical limb 28 to which the counterweight is secured by bolts 54. The member 26 may either be attached to the frame extension 22 in the orientation shown, or turned from that orientation to a position in which its vertical limb 28 is on the rearward end of the horizontal limb thereby displacing the counterweight rearwardly by approximately the length of the horizontal limb 30. This system enables the same truck body to be adapted for two different ranges of load-carrying capacity. Where the truck is electrically powered, the rearmost adjusted position of the counterweight allows for a larger battery compartment 11 and therefore more batteries when the higher load capacity is in use. The attachment bolts 54 may be of various lengths to allow for intermediate positions of adjustment and they may be screwed in or out for fine adjustment of horizontal position. Fine vertical adjustment may be allowed for by making the bolts a loose fit in corresponding holes 54 in the weight which is frictionally held by the heads of bolt 54, the shanks of which fit screw-threaded liners secured to the vertical limb 28 of member 26 (see Fig. 7).
