[Also in Group XXII] For measuring the angular position of a vertically swingable machine tool head, an optical angle-measuring instrument 5, Fig. 1, is provided which is in releasable connection with an assembly element 4 which is permanently fixed to the machine tool head, the members 4, 5 being forced into contact along plane surfaces 6, 11, Fig. 2, perpendicular to the swivel plane of the machine tool head. As shown, the element 4 is a plane parallel plate mounted on the side face 3 of the support 1 of a planing machine. The plane surface 6 has borings 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, for the fixing screws, a longitudinal groove 8, partially overlapped at each end 9 to receive guides 13 on an intermediate plate 10 providing the surface 11 and associated with the instrument 5, and a recess 15 which coacts with a stop lug 14 on plate 10. The intermediate plate 10 has a truncated conical extension by which it is connected to the instrument 5. For releasably clamping together plates 4 and 10, clamping screws 12 are provided. Alternatively, the plate 4 may form a permanent magnet for attracting the ferromagnetic plate 10. The reversible level 17 of instrument 5 is mounted at the centre of a scale 18 viewed through the optical system 19. To check that the 90 degrees position of instrument 5 corresponds to the perpendicular position of the direction of movement 2 of the support 1, or of the spindle axis in vertical milling machines, with reference to the table surface of the machine tool, the instrument 5 is placed, by means of an assembly plate, on the table 24. If there is a deviation, either the machine tool table is swung to correct it or a plane parallel adjusting plate in the path of the rays of the reading microscope is turned to apply a correction. If the plane parallel plate 4 cannot be mounted on the side face of the swingable head, it may be replaced by an angle member fixed to the front side of the head.
