Abstract

934,754. Magnetic &c. recording etc.; seismographic apparatus. SOCONY MOBIL OIL CO. Inc. May 4, 1960 [May 4, 1959], No. 15811/60. Class 40 (2). [Also in Groups XXXV, XXXIX and XL (c)] In a seismic exploration system utilizing wave source 11 and geophone spread 12 moved in fixed spatial relation, the geophone outputs are applied to magnetic recording head 30, the outputs of reproducing heads 40... 47 are selectively combined in selector 55, the selector output is fed to a. second magnetic recording head 50 and the outputs of selector 55 and reproducing head 51 are fed via mode switch 57 to mixer 63 the output of which is recorded on electro-sensitive paper chart 74. Tho drum recorder 31 is rotated by motor 33 at a speed having a fixed relationship with that of motor 77, which rotates the drum of spiral recording electrode 73, by an automatic control system utilizing a phase detector 104 (see Group XXXV). Paper-driving motor 75 is synchronized with the traverse of boat 10. Selector 55 comprises a parallel combination of on/off switches, one for each of reproducing heads 40 ... 47 and mode switch 57 provides for selection as follows: An amplifier 69 incorporating automatic volume control may be switched into circuit (see Group XXXIX). The ignition of a combustible gas mixture in tube 11 is synchronized with the beginning of the scanning cycle of spiral 73 and with the reproduction of the signals stored on drum 32 by pulses from pick-up 85. The ensuing record on paper 74 is a seismic crosssection of the region explored. In one embodiment of the magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus, heads 30. 40 ... 47 are supported on spring-biased brackets mounted in holders secured to a mounting ring, Fig. 4 (not shown) ; in an alternative arrangement the recording and erase heads are moved by a travelling nut along a rotating drum, and fixed reproducing heads are equi-spaced along the drum, Figs. 6 and 7 (neither shown). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 902,417.
