Class 56, In the drawing of sheet glass substantially horizontally from a preformed bulb whose cooled upper surface is on a level with the glass in a melting tank and whose lower surface is in contact with a drawing sill which rises in the forward feed direction of the glass, the drawing sill is of cooled carbon and the drawing chamber is provided with means to maintain a non- oxidizing atmosphere in the chamber. The sheet 10 of glass is drawn from a layer or bulb 6 of glass lying over a sill 3 at the exit of a melting tank 2, the sill 3 being of carbon cooled by water passing through a tube 8 and the upper surface of glass cooled by element 7. Edge rollers 13 maintain the width of the sheet 10 which passes over a roller 12 and then is either drawn downwardly by rollers 11 or continues horizontally or first downwardly and then turns over roller 18 to pass out of the chamber 5. Cooling elements 14, 15 further cool the sheet 10. A non-oxidizing atmosphere such as nitrogen, is discharged under pressure through injector 16 into the chamber 5. In case oxygen or ordinary air penetrates into the chamber, a component 17 of porous carbon adjacent sill 3 is provided to remove the oxygen. Specification 874,534 and U.S.A.
