Abstract
934,399. Aircraft hangers; floating building structures. J. E. WHEELER. March 21, 1960, No. 9958/60. Class 20 (1). [Also in Groups XXX, XXXIII and XXXVII] An aircraft hanger or like structure or floating building structure is of cylindrical form having an access opening in the wall associated with a closure member 17, Fig. 2, the structure also comprising a floor 10 rotatable about the axis of the structure and means for moving the closure member vertically between a first position in which it engages the floor for rotation therewith, and a second position in which it is disengaged from the floor. The structure includes a central roofsupporting tubular column 2 which in its lower end houses an electric motor for rotating the floor through bevel gearing, and at its upper end carries a bearing in which is rotatably mounted a ring member 19 which supports framing 18A, 18B and 18C from which the closure member 17 is suspended. A lever, Fig. 5 (not shown), mounted beneath the ring 19 is coupled by cables to mechanism above the closure member by operation of which the closure member can be moved vertically into and out of engagement with the floor. Plugs 20, 21, 22 at the bottom of the closure member 17 locate in corresponding recesses in the floor when the closure is in the floor engaging position. The circuit of the motor for rotating the floor is broken by a switch 51 when it is actuated by cams on the edge of the floor. Two sets of cams are provided to meet alternative requirements of housing up to four aircraft, Fig. 2, or up to five aircraft, Fig. 3. When five aircraft are housed, they are tilted to accommodate the wing-span by means of interchangeable wheel tracks 30A, 30B, 30C of different height. The column 2 also contains a hoist for towing aircraft into the hanger. The structure may be constructed as a floating structure intended to house water - borne vehicles.
