A re-chargeable electric cell has a silver electrode comprising a mixture of mercuric oxide, silver and a carbonaceous substance, the mercuric oxide constituting 50% to 70% by weight of the electrode. An alkaline electrolyte is preferred and advantageously may contain a small proportion of an aromatic acid (toluic, terephthalic or isophthalic acid). A zinc or cadmium counter-electrode may be used and should be amalgamated.
