In a machine for honing, lapping, polishing or similar abrasive treatment of contoured or profiled surfaces as in Specification 882,859, the tool shank is arranged to be secured in the pivoted deflector arm socket by a push-in pin which has a finger grip or handle and which has a spring or wedge action when pushed through corresponding holes provided in the arm socket and the shank, said holes being slightly out of register with one another so that the pin forces the shank against an abutment to locate it firmly. In the opposite walls of the socket 2 are registering round holes 3, 3. The tool body is of metal or alloy softer than the material to be honed, is of mushroom cross-section and has an internally recessed shank 5 into which is cast a harder insert 6, e.g. of high tensile steel, having a round hole 7 which does not quite register with the holes 3, 3 when the shank is pushed up into the socket. A longitudinally slotted hollow cylindrical pin 8 with one end cast into a handle 9 can be inserted through the holes 3, 7, 3 to force the shank 5 against the underface of the arm so securing the tool firmly, the spring nature of the pin serving to retain it in position. A square prismatic hone H1, Fig. 5, is mounted square in the tool head 10A either by forcing it into a correspondingly shaped but slightly smaller socket provided in the soft metal head or by adhering it in position. The tool head 10B, Fig. 7, is angled on the tool body. The tool head 10C, Fig. 8, has a projection on which is pivotally mounted an auxiliary head 10CX in which the hone H1 is secured. A shortened tool head 10D, Fig. 9, has cast into it one end of a soft metal rod 11 whose other end has secured on it a spherical hone H2. A lengthened tool head 10E, Fig. 10, has a ball end 10EX recessed to receive the shank of a hone H3 with a hemispherical working end.
