In a shaft furnace, material is discharged through radial slots by discharge arms arranged to pivot about one or more centres, distributer bodies of saddle section and flared outwardly being arranged over the radial slots and extending between a central conical distributer and the furnace wall. Material is discharged through radial slots 8 in the floor of a shaft furnace by oscillating arms 10, each comprising a box girder with shaped side pieces 4. The arms 10 are secured to a ring 13 guided by rollers on rails fixed to the furnace framework and to a central tube. The arms 10 are driven by a toothed segment 22 oscillated by a piston arrangement 23 and engaging a rack 21 secured to the outer end of one of the arms 10. In a modification, Fig. 7, pairs of oscillating arms 10a, 10b are arranged between the discharge slots 8, each pair of arms 10a, 10b having a common pivot 15a near the inner edge of the diametrically opposite discharge slot. Each arm 10a, 10b carries one shaped sidepiece, and the arms are oscillated by individual piston arrangements 17a. The radial discharge slots 8 and the arms 10 or 10a, 10b are covered by saddle shaped bodies 26, 28, respectively, and a central distributer cone la which may serve to admit air to the furnace, protects the bearings or pivots.
