Abstract

934,225. Magnetic couplings. TECHEM G.m.b.H. Jan. 27, 1961, No. 3304/61. Class 35. [Also in Group XX] The heat conveyed by a fluid flowing through a pipe is measured by counting at 6 the revolutions of a rotor 4 which is immersed in a viscous liquid 3, such as a silicone oil or a mixture of such oil with transformer oil, the liquid 3 being adjacent the flowing fluid so that its viscosity is dependent on the temperature of the latter. The rotor 4 may be of ferromagnetic material and be driven magnetically by a bladed wheel 1 immersed in the flowing fluid and provided with one or more magnets 2. Alternatively the rotor 4 may be of copper or aluminium so that it is driven by eddy currents. Thus the rotor 4 may be driven by a constant torque independent of the rate of flow of the heating fluid or by a torque which is proportional to such flow. Alternatively by surrounding a copper or aluminium rotor by an iron ring the rotor may have both effects combined, i.e. its driving torque has a measure of dependence on the fluid flow. In a modification the bladed wheel is replaced by a clockwork or electric moter which operates so long as the heating system is in operation. The viscous liquid 3 may become solid below a predetermined temperature so that no rotation of rotor 4 occurs below such temperature.
