Abstract

Flow measurement is required to enable adjustments to be made in the quantities of substances used in automatic casting processes. A coating channel (4) contains a liquid metal (5) which is submitted to a magnetic field produced by two coils in a magnetic circuit (8). The poles (9, 10) contain cooling water. Two carbon electrodes (2, 3) spaced a known distance apart sense a potential difference which in the presence of a constant magnetic field enables the speed of flow to be determined. The cross section is determined by using a Wheatstone bridge to measure the resistance of the liquid metal between two electrodes a known distance apart.
