Abstract

933,990. Automatic power factor control; induction generators. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. June 22, 1961 [June 24, 1960], No. 22674/61. Classes 35 and 38 (4). The power factor of an A.C. supply system is controlled by automatically controlling the phase and amplitude of the current supplied to the wound rotor of an asynchronous motor, the stator of which is connected to the supply system. The required active component of rotor current (to overcome losses) is computed by measuring the rotor speed by means of a D.C. tachometer generator 8, comparing the speed signal with a reference signal at 12a and modulating the error signal at 13 to produce a 3 phase error signal at mains frequency. This signal is in turn modulated at 14, 15, 16 by the output of an A.C. tachometer generator 9 to provide at 14d, 15d, 16d a 3-phase error signal at slip frequency. The required reactive component of rotor current is computed by multiplying at 17 the outputs of current transformers 5 and potential transformers 6. The transformers are paired off appropriately to provide a 90 degrees phase shift of the voltage signal with respect to the current. The reactive V.A. signal from multipliers 17 is compared at 18a with a reference signal and the resulting error signal is modulated first to 3 phase mains frequency at 19, and then modulated at 20, 21, 22 to provide a 3 phase slip frequency signal at 20d, 21d, 22d. The computed active and reactive rotor current signals are now combined in an undisclosed manner at 70 and compared at 23a with the actual rotor current, measured by current transformers 7, and the resultant is used to control, in an undisclosed manner, the reversed pairs of rectifiers 2 that form a frequency converter for supplying the rotor of the motor at slip frequency from the supply mains. The rectifiers 2 may be grid controlled valves (as shown) or silicon-controlled rectifiers, Fig. 1 (not shown).
