Abstract
933,672. Ram jet engine-propulsion nozzles. NORD-AVIATION SOC. NATIONALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS AERONAUTIQUES. Nov. 6, 1961 [Feb. 23, 1961], No. 39654/61. Class 110 (3). The invention relates to means for facilitating the starting of a ram jet engine and comprises the provision of a destructible, constricted, outlet nozzle serving as the initial jet pipe outlet, the nozzle being adapted to be melted by the heat of the exhaust gases within a predetermined time after the engine is ignited so as to leave the permanent outlet nozzle whose outlet area is greater than that of the destructible nozzle. The assembly shown in Fig. 1 comprises a ram jet nozzle 1 of convergent-divergent form having a convergent portion 3 and a throat 5, there being disposed therein a destructible nozzle 2 of convergent form, the outlet 4 of which is of smaller cross-sectional area than the throat 5 of the permanent nozzle. The nozzle 2 is disposed against the convergent portion 3 of the permanent nozzle and is secured by means of bolts 7 passing through the cylindrical wall portion of the permanent nozzle and through a cylindrical extension 6 of the destructible nozzle. A row of holes 8 is formed in the destructible nozzle 2, the nozzle first failing in the region of the holes when the ram jet unit comes into operation. The destructible nozzle is formed of material having a low-melting point such as magnesium alloy. In a second embodiment, the convergent destructible nozzle is disposed wholly within the cylindrical portion of the permanent nozzle. In Fig. 2 the destructible nozzle is supported within the permanent nozzle 1 by means of springs 9, while in Fig. 3, the destructible nozzle is supported within the permanent nozzle by means of studs 10, 11. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the permanent nozzle is of convergent form and the destructible nozzle comprises a correspondingly convergent portion 12 and a second portion 13 of greater convergence, the destructible nozzle being supported within the permanent nozzle by means of tension springs 9a. In a further embodiment similar to Fig. 3, the circumferential row of holes 8 is replaced by rows of holes extending along generatrices of the destructible nozzle.
