Abstract

1-Substituted- 3-carboxymethylbarbituric acids wherein the 1-substituent (R2) is n-butyl, t-butyl n-hexyl, cyclohexyl, n-octyl, benzyl, phenyl or o-methoxyphenyl are prepared by reacting the appropriate amine R2NH2 with ethoxycarbonylmethyl isocyanate to give a substituted urea of the formula C2H5O.CO.CH2.NH.CO.NHR2, condensing this with malonic acid in the presence of acetic anhydride and acetic acid to give a 3-carbethoxymethyl-barbituric acid having the group R2 in the 1-position, and then hydrolysing this to the free acid. Specification 850,281 is referred to.ALSO:Oxonol dyes having the general formula <FORM:0933466/IV(a)/1> wherein R1 is a carboxyalkyl group, R2 is a cycloalkyl, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl group and n is 1, 2 or 3 are prepared by condensing the appropriately substituted barbituric acid with a glutaconic aldehyde dianilide (including 1-anilino-5-anilo-3-methyl-1,3-pentadiene hydrobromide), with a b -ethoxy-acrolein diethyl acetal or with an alkyl ester of an ortho-aliphatic acid, in the presence of a base. The groups R2 may be n-butyl, t-butyl, n-hexyl, cyclohexyl, n-octyl, benzyl, phenyl or o-methoxyphenyl. Specification 850,281 is referred to.
