Abstract

932,872. Inertia vibration-dampers. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. Feb. 1, 1962, No. 3974/62. Class 108(3). A damper for preventing windinduced vibrations in suspended rods, cables &c., e.g. an overhead electrical transmission line 20, and of the kind comprising identical inertia members 24 which have their centres of gravity in the axis of a resilient energy absorbing member 14 the centre point of which is connected by a clamp 12 to the line 20 is characterized in that the centre of gravity C of each member 24 is located inwardly of its effective point of attachment A to the resilient member 14 by an amount in excess of 12% of the unrestrained length of resilient member 14 at the respective side of the clamp 12 between the points A, B. The inertia members 24, of substantially equal mass and weight in any one size of damper and each of tubular bell shape with stepped outer cylindrical surfaces 26, 28, 30, are connected to the resilient member 14 by split, tapered, collets 34 which are wedged to tightly clamp the ends of the resilient member 14 in corresponding tapered apertures 38 in the portions 26 of the inertia members 24. A drain hole 42 is provided in each inertia member. In a modification, Fig. 4, not shown, the inertia members are generally C-shaped. Specification 427,503 is referred to.
