Abstract

932,608. Change-speed control. INSTRUMENT RESEARCH LABORATORIES Ltd. Dec. 6, 1961 [Sept. 13, 1960], No. 31537/60. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIII] A marine propulsion unit, e.g. for attachment outboard to a boat's transom, comprises a train casing 1 containing a horizontal power-driven shaft 14, a sub-shaft 26 at right-angles and geared thereto for rotation selectively in either direction by means of a movable gear-changing element 27, a propeller shaft driven by the subshaft 26, a clutch 19 to connect the shaft 14 to a drive from an I.C. engine, a throttle control 55 for the engine, and a manually-operated control element 34 having cam surfaces coacting withcam followers on mechanical devices serving respectively to operate the gear-changing element 27, engine clutch 19 and throttle control 55 in synchronized relationship. A chain-drive 23 from the engine drives the shaft 14 through the clutch 19 which is actuated by a rod 22 movable axially in a bore of the shaft 14. A pair of bevel gears 24 rotate freely on the shaft 14 and are in constant mesh with a gear 25 on the sub-shaft 26. The movable gear element 27 comprises a dog-clutch which is movable axially on the shaft 14 by a sleeve 32, also disposed in a bore of the shaft 14, to selectively engage either of the gears 24. The control element 34 comprises a disc rotatable manually by a push-pull cable engaging a peripheral groove. In one face it is provided with a cam surface 44 in which a follower 40 on a crank 41 moves to operate the element 27 and on the opposite face a cam surface 47 controls the movement of a linkage 51, 53 and 54 to control the throttle of an I.C. engine. On the same side as the surface 44 two conical projections 46 are disposed in a groove 45 which move the clutch control rod 22. The throttle control cam surface 47 is relieved at 57 to allow the engine speed to be increased for tuning &c. A shaft drive from the engine may be provided. The cam surfaces may be disposed on a reciprocatable element. The I.C. engine may be mounted outboard.
