An end fitting for a fluid actuator of the kind comprising an open-ended flexible hose 10 adapted to communicate with a source of fluid pressure and capable of radial expansion and contraction, comprises a nipple 28 of generally flattened configuration adapted to be inserted in one end of the hose and having a passage 40 therethrough for connecting the interior of the hose to the fluid pressure source and external means for clamping the hose in flattened configuration upon the nipple. As shown in Fig. 1 the nipple comprises a pair of cylindrical portions 30 defining the fluid passage 40, and a web 32 therebetween. The clamping means comprises two plates 42 which when drawn together by means of screw 48 and nut 50 press opposite portions of the hose into sealing engagement with the web 32 and wrap the hose tightly about the cylindrical portions 30. The passages 40 are screw threaded so that a source of fluid pressure may be affixed in communication with the hose. As shown one passage 40 is closed by a screw 52. Sealing rings may be provided in grooves formed in the portions 30. In another embodiment the nipple comprises a single cylindrical portion defining the passage and having a planar portion extending radially outwardly therefrom. The hose is pressed by clamping means similar to that shown in Fig. 1 on to the planar portion. As shown in Fig. 6 the nipple is provided with a chamber 74 having threaded bosses 76 axially disposed at right angles to one another. In a further embodiment Fig. 12 the nipple having a threaded bore 92 therethrough comprises a cylindrical neck 84 provided with serrations 94 and formed with a flange 86, and an elongated rectangular portion 88. The hose is clamped on the neck 84 by a clamp band. In another embodiment Fig. 13, two plates 98 clamp the hose end on to the nipple 106 which comprises a cylindrical portion 110 having diametrically opposed wings 112, a flange 114, and an enlarged head having flats 116; a threaded axial bore 118 being provided: In a still further embodiment, Fig. 17, the hose is clamped with the hose end abutting wall 144 by means of plates 120, screws 128 and nuts 130. The hose is preferably made up of an inner elastomer lining reinforced by a fabric covering which may in turn be covered by a further elastomer layer.
