Abstract
The invention comprises a stabilised formaldehyde solution comprising formaldehyde, a solvent therefor and 2-500 parts by weight per million calculated as basic nitrogen of one or more non-aromatic tertiary amines other than hexamine, and which is weakly acid, neutral or weakly basic corresponding to a free acid content up to 0.2% by weight of formic acid or a free base content by moles equivalent to up to 0.12 by weight of formic acid. These compositions may be obtained by adding to the solution of formaldehyde the required quantity of a non-aromatic primary, secondary or tertiary amine, other than hexamine. If primary or secondary amines are used they are converted by the formaldehyde to tertiary amines. The "non-aromatic" amines are defined as amines in which no aromatic nucleus is directly linked to an amine group. The amines which may be used include alkylamines, hydroxyalkylamines, cyclic amines and alkylene diamines. The preferred ones are trimethylamine, triethylamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine and 2-diethylaminoethanol. In addition to the amines present there may be present other formaldehyde stabilising agents, for example metal sequestering agents such as hexamine.
