Abstract
1,5,9-cyclododecatrienes are obtained by polymerizing conjugated diolefins in the presence of an inert solvent and a catalyst soluble in the solvent and comprising a dialkyl aluminium halide and a complex of a titanium halide with a nitrogen-containing organic compound. The diolefine may be butadiene, which yields transtrans-cis-12,5,9-cyclododecatriene, isoprene or piperylene, and need not be used pure; monoolefins present are not affected. Titanium trichloride is the preferred halide and may be complexed with n-octylamine, n-nonylamine, 3,3,5-trimethylhexylamine, pyridine or quinoline. Diethyl aluminium chloride is the preferred aluminium compound. The mol. ratio of nitrogen-compound to titanium may be 1-10:1, and 0,1-10 millimols of titanium and 10-40 millimols of aluminium are used per litre of reaction mixture, the molar amount of aluminium compound being at least equal to the sum of the molar amounts of titanium and nitrogen compounds. Benzene is the preferred solvent and the concentration of diolefin in the solvent may be 30-1000 g./1. The temperature may be 0-150 DEG C. and the pressure that produced by the reactants.
