931,774. Programming arrangements for computers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 7, 1959 [Nov. 26, 1958], No. 38190/58. Class 106 (1). A parallel-mode computer has an auxiliary store (called the BX store) used for storing addresses in the main store, and which operates in two distinct ways : (a) when data transfer to or from a peripheral unit is called for an X register (not shown) transmits a BX address corresponding to that unit via gate 3; this selects a main store address which is also passed via an arithmetic unit where 1 is added to it before it is re-written in the BX store, so that the next block of data to or from that peripheral unit will be taken from or entered on to an " adjacent " address, (b) when an instruction is received, the B-digits are passed via gate 4 to read out an instruction-modifying number from the BX store which is passed to the arithmetic unit, the modified instruction then reading out the operand from the main store via gate 2.
