Abstract

Dyes having the general formula R-N=N-Py where R and Py are 5-pyrazolone residues joined to the azo linkage in their 4-positions, or R is an aryl group having an electron-donating group in the o- or pposition to the azo linkage, are prepared by coupling diazotized amines of the formula RNH2 with the appropriate 5-pyrazolones. The electron-donating group in the aryl group R may be hydroxy, amino, or substituted amino such as methyl-, benzyl-, phenyl-, dimethyl-, diethyl-, di-b -hydroxyethylor didodecylamino groups and includes an N- thiomorpholinyl group. The aryl group R may include further substituents such as sulpho, carboxy, methyl, ethoxy or chloro groups. When R is a pyrazolone, thio may be 1- (p-sulphophenyl)-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone. The pyrazolone residues Py are generally 1-phenyl-3-methyl-, heptadecyl-, or carboxy-5-pyrazolones in which the 1-phenyl group may have sulpho, chloro, amino, methyl or stearoylamino substituents, or it may be 1-(p-sulphophenyl)-3-(p1-lauroylaminophenyl)-5-pyrazolone.
