Abstract

Oxygen free gas mixtures are prepared by adding to recycled oxygen free mixture of nitrogen and noble gases, in a proportion of less than 1 part air to 10 parts mixture, adding hydrogen in sufficient amount to react with all the oxygen present as in the parent Specification, passing resulting mixture over a catalyst for the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen at a pressure higher than that at which the product is to be collected, removing the water formed, separating a major portion of the oxygen free mixture for recycling, expanding the remainder in a tank, and starting or stopping the feed of air and hydrogen in response to pressure variations in the tank. Air and hydrogen pass through valves 3,4 from compressors 2,1, into recycle stream from pump G, and the resulting mixture is fed to catalyst furnace K. The proportion of hydrogen to air is controlled in response to <PICT:0931469/III/1> analyser A. Water is separated in condenser W and withdrawn through two float operated valves, S1,S2 the former being of smaller section than the latter. A major part of the effluent is recycled through pump G and the remainder passed through drying tank T1 which operates or is regenerated alternately with drying tank T2. Dry gas is withdrawn through valve U operating at a certain pressure to tank V at a lower pressure. The feed valves 3,4 are operated by pressure controller D. The drying tanks are regenerated by hot gases circulated by pump P or by cooling in tank W2 under reduced pressure, condensate being removed by float operated valves S3,S4.
