Abstract

931,416. Laminates. BENDIX CORPORATION. March 3, 1961 [March 11, 1960], No. 7929/61. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. [Also in Group XXII] Two elements, at least one of which is rigid, are hermetically sealed together by coating one or each of the mating surfaces of the elements with a dispersion of thermoplastic synthetic resin, heating the coated surface or surfaces to fuse the thermoplastic coating thereto, allowing the coated surface or surfaces to cool, putting the elements together, heating again to re-fuse the thermoplastic coating until a bond has been formed between the two elements and then recooling the whole. The thermoplastic synthetic resin may be polyethylene or polypropylene. The second heating step may be performed by induction heating. The method is applicable to the bonding of metal to metal, thermoplastic synthetic resin or glass, or thermoplastic synthetic resin to thermoplastic synthetic resin It is useful where the elements are subjected during assembly to stresses that would tend to create strains in the bonding material.
