Abstract

931,326. Ratchet gearing. LEDEX Inc. June 20, 1960 [June 19, 1959], No. 21536/60. Class 80 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] A fluid-operated actuator comprises a shaft 22 journalled for rotation in a housing 10 having a toroidal bladder means 34 forming an expansible chamber, and a mechanism 52, 62, 64 for converting an axial thrust resulting from expansion of the bladder into a rotary movement of the shaft. The bladder which has a normally open seam 36 closed by being clamped between parts 12, 14 of the housing, abuts a thrust plate 46 having a groove engaged by balls 54 in turn engaging a groove in a plate 52 splined to the shaft 22. The plate 52 is formed with arcuate inclined grooves 66 co-operating with balls 64 in similar grooves 68 in a plate 62 which engages a clutch disc 72 on the housing. The shaft is provided with a detent wheel 80 having notches engageable by a spring-pressed ball 82. When fluid pressure is supplied through a port 40 to the bladder, the plates 48, 52, 62 are urged to the right, the grooves 66, 68 acting through the balls 64 to apply a torque to the plates 52, 62 to rotate plate 52 and the shaft 22, plate 62 being held against rotation by the friction disc 72 and the wheel 80 rotated so that the ball 82 engages a different notch. Upon the release of fluid pressure, the plate 62 is disengaged from the friction disc and returned to its initial position relative to plate 52 by a spring 78, the ball 82 and wheel 80 maintaining the shaft in its new position. Repeated admissions of fluid-pressure to the bladder thus provide a step-by-step rotation of the shaft 22. Extrusion of the bladder past the thrust plate 46 is prevented by overlapping shims 48, 50, one closely fitting a sleeve on the shaft and the other closely fitting the inner surface of the housing. Two similar actuators plated back-to-back may be combined into a unit having a single shaft, fluid pressure supplied to one or other of the actuators rotating the shaft step-by-step in one direction or the other.
