A sheet metal bending and folding press is characterized in that the movable press member has an upward extension guided in the machine frame. A movable press member B is moved down by hydraulic piston and cylinder means 34, slide blocks 22, comprising concave and convex members 24, 25, mounted in the press member B sliding on guides 20 fixed to columns 16 of the press. An upward extension 36 of the press member B has, seated in recesses 40 therein, members 38 bearing on guides 42 fixed on the main frame 18 of the machine, each guide 42 including a resilient strip 52 to allow slight endwise movement of the press member B and being adjustable by screws 54. Sensing members may be provided in the guides 42 to act on valves controlling the flow of pressure fluid into the cylinders 34. Hydraulic dampers may be provided to counteract longitudinal movement of the press member B.
