Abstract
5-[b - (N-ethyl- N-phenylamino) ethyl]-isothiouronium chloride is prepared by boiling a mixture of thiourea and N-ethyl-N-b -chloroethyl-aniline and ethanol, cooling and filtering the crystals formed. 5-[b - (N-b 1-cyanoethyl- N-3-methylphenylamino)ethyl] isothiouronium chloride is similarly prepared using N-b -chloroethyl-N-b -eyanoethyl-m-toluidine. Specification 650,850 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises water-soluble monoazo dyes free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups which contain at least one isothiouronium salt group connected to an aromatic nucleus through the nitrogen atom of a linking group of the formula -N(R)-X- wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical and X is a substituted or unsubstituted alkylene radical of from 2 to 4 carbon atoms. The isothiouronium salt groups are those which in one of their resonating forms are of formula <FORM:0931118/IV(a)/1> wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radicals or R1 and R3 may together form an ethylene radical and Y is an anion. The dyes may be prepared by normal diazotization and coupling procedures using suitable components or by treating a monoazo dye free from sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups but containing attached to an aromatic ring a group of formula -N(R)-X-Ha with a thiourea of formula <FORM:0931118/IV(a)/2> The dyes are used to colour textile materials comprising polymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile and dicyanoethylene. In examples: (1) the monoazo dye p-nitroaniline --> 5-[b -(N-ethyl-N-phenylamino) ethyl] isothiouronium chloride is prepared; (2) the dye N-ethyl-N-chloroacetyl-p-phenylene-diamine --> 5-[b -(N(b 1-cyanoethyl-N-3-methylphenylamino) ethyl] isothiouronium chloride is heated with a mixture of tetramethyl-thiourea and water, the water is distilled off in vacuo and the residue digested with ether and dried to give a water soluble dyestuff.
