930,791. Cutting tubes. R. C. CAN CO. July 7, 1959, No. 23352/59. Class 31 (1). [Also in Groups XVII and XXVIII] In the making of a tubular container body of paper or chip board a plurality of layers, e.g. four, are wound spirally on a mandrel and circumferential cuts are produced in the plies of the inner and outer telescopic sections of the body. As shown, a mandrel 32 driven by shaft 33 carries rotary knives 34 on opposite sides of which are rubber rolls 35, 36, the diameter of the latter being equal to that of the knives. An adjacent mandrel 39 carries knives 41, 40 protruding from the mandrel; the knives 41 are of a diameter to cut through only the two outer plies of the body. The body is placed on the mandrel 32 and an air motor is actuated to force the mandrel 39 into rolling engagement with the outside of the body, so that the knives 40 cut through the body and contact the steel rolls 37, the pressure of the mandrel 39 flattening the rolls 35, 36 to expose the knives 34 an amount to cut through the inner plies of the body while the knives 41 cut through the outer plies. In a modification there is a cutter assembly 75, Fig. 13, including knives 76, 77 and 78 which move into the body and travel therewith at the same speed, the knives 76, 78 cutting completely through the tube and the knife 77 cutting completely through the two outer plies only of the body.
