Abstract
930,699. Non-linear resistances. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 14, 1962 [April 11, 1961], No. 13019/61. Class 37. In a non-linear resistance element a substantially single layer of granules 1, Fig. 1, of a resistance material whose resistance is dependent on applied voltage is arranged between two electrically conductive surfaces, 2a and 2b, pressure is applied to cause plastic flow of at least one of the surfaces such that the granules penetrate into it and the surfaces are secured together by turning over a flange on one surface over the other, the surfaces being electrically insulated, other than through the granules 1, by an annular insulating washer 4. The discs 2a and 2b may be of aluminium or soft copper or discs of harder material may be proved with a layer of soft solder, or a layer of foil into which the particles embed. The interstices between granules may be filled with smaller granules which may be of resistance material having a different characteristic, or of an inert material, e.g. sand or molochite. In order to obtain a single layer of granules one disc may be coated with a silicone grease and the requisite number of granules sprinkled over to surface to be retained by the grease. The resistance material may be silicon carbide.
