930,698. Infra-red fluid analysis. Sir HOWARD GRUBB PARSONS & CO. Ltd. April 16, 1962 [March 16, 1961], No. 9677/61. Class 40 (3). The invention relates to apparatus for the analysis of substances by absorption of infrared radiation and comprises an infra-red source 1, a cell 2 for containing a sample under test, an infra-red detector 3, for example a thermocouple or an indium antimonide cell, which receives the radiation from the source 1 via the cell 2, an optical filter 5 in the radiation path for passing a desired wavelength region in which the sample has appreciable absorption and a rotatable disc of material 6 transparent to at least a portion of the radiation transmitted by the filter, the disc being coated or covered over a portion of its area (Figs. 1a and 1b, not shown) such that the said portion has absorption bands or interference fringes overlapping the region of absorption of the sample so that when the disc is rotated an alternating signal is produced by the detector which is related to the absorption characteristics of the sample. With the cell empty, Fig. 2a shows by curve A the spectral distribution received by the detector 3 when the radiation is passing through a transparent sector of the disc and by-curve B the spectral distribution received by the detector when the radiation is passing through a coated sector of the disc. Fig. 2b shows the curve c obtained with a sample in the cell when the sample has an absorption band nearly coincident with that of the coated sector D. With the disc rotating the difference in the absorption of the sample and the coated sector of the disc as shown by curves C and D produces an alternating signal at the detector which is amplified by an amplifier 8 and fed to an output meter 9 or pen recorder which gives an indication of the concentration of the particular substance under investigation in the sample. The apparatus may be used for the investigation of substances having a substantially uniformly-spaced set of vibrationrotation absorption bands in which case the diso is made of material e.g. mica which produces regularly-spaced interference fringes with transmission troughs between the fringes coinciding with the rotation bands of the substance under investigation and the coated sectors of the disc are coated on one or both sides with material e.g. zinc sulphide of higher refractive index than the material of the disc.
