930,475. Selective punching machines. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Sept. 23, 1960 [Oct. 14, 1959], No. 32719/60. Class 31(2). [Also in Group XVI] A punch mechanism, Fig. 8, comprises punch pins 205 moving in a block 206 to punch a tape or card inserted between it and a die-plate 216 as a shaft 230 having cams 231 is rotated to force the block and die upwards against a fixed plate 214. The plate 214 has openings 220 opposite each pin 205 which are thus only effective when an interposer 221 has been actuated by its magnet 226. The magnets are controlled by a keyboard, Fig. 1, the depression of a key 1 of which acts through straightening of a spring element 2 to unlatch a tooth 11 of a stop pin or element 6 from a shoulder 12 to allow a spring 14 to lower it so that a part 15 enters openings 20 or 21 in strips 19 while a finger portion 35 rocks a bail 36 thus closing contacts 52 and unlatching a latch 26 normally holding the strips 19 against the action of their springs 28. When released a stop-pin 6 enters the notch 31 between cylindrical elements 32 in a member 30 the remainder of which are moved so close together that the second key cannot be actuated simultaneously. Release of the strips 19 allows those having long holes 21 engaging the selected stop to be moved so that their flanges 47 close the corresponding contacts 48 which are effective to operate electromagnets 226. Closing of the contacts 52 clutches the shaft 230 to cause it to rotate a single revolution during which it first closes contacts CB 1 in the circuit to the magnets 226 to make those whose other contacts 48 are closed effective. Contacts CB2 and CB3 close subsequently to actuate magnets 45 to restore the bail 36 and a magnet 51 to restore the lever 24 to return the moved strips 19. In a modified punch mechanism, projecting portions of the strips 19 act directly in place of the interposers 221. The keyboard may also control a printing mechanism.
