Abstract

Powdered B, Si, Te, predominantly less than 0,1n in diameter is produced by thermal evaporation of the element at a pressure below 500n Hg. abs. followed by condensation of the resultant vapours in a free space maintained at a pressure below 500n Hg. abs. The powder is then collected in an inert medium, e.g. hexane, heptane paraffin &c, or an inert gas. A thin <PICT:0930402/III/1> oxide film may be produced on the powder by controlled oxidation or the powder may be reacted with hydrogen, a halogen, a Group VB element (other than nitrgen), or a Group VIB element (other than oxygen). The Figure shows an apparatus for powder production in which an externally cooled vacuum-tight tank 10 is connected to a vacuum pump 13. The required element is evaporated from a heated crucible 14 and condenses in the free space within the tank. Powder adhering to the tank walls is removed by a rotating brush and is collected with a collection chamber 22 containing inert medium.
