As packages A pass through a wrapping machine generally similar to that described in Specification 856,344, a heated element 4 is moved recurrently into and out of contact with the wrapper ends of successive packets to cause overlapping wrapper folds to adhere to each other, there being spring operated means 29, 30, 31 for moving the element 4, after a delay period, away from a package should the wrapping machine stop while the heated element is in contact with the package. As shown springs 31 continually bias to the left a piston 29 of an airtype escapement such that if the machine is at a standstill with the heater 4 in engagement with a package, a collar 28 on the piston 29 eventually engages a roller 27 to displace it and cause a linkage system 25, 19, 18 to swing the element 4 away from its operative position. Whilst the machine is operating normally, a pusher 33, reciprocated by a link 6, always acts on the collar 28 to return it to the right before it contacts the roller 27. Wrapping steps. As a packet A moves to the right over a base 1 and beneath a top plate 2, a wrapper blank that has been fed down into the path of the packet is folded into U form about it. The trailing limbs of the U are folded against the rear face of the packet first by a lower tucker (not shown) and then by an upper tucker 3, adhesive being applied between these overlapping ends. The upper tucker 3 is apertured to enable the heating element 4 to project through it. Side tuckers 5 are provided for forming side tucks, as described in Specification 856,344 above referred to.
