Abstract

930,156. Moulding pressure vessels. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 16, 1962 [March 13, 1961], No. 9177/61. Class 87(2). A method of making a pressure vessel of fibre-reinforced plastic material comprises first forming an inner shell 1 by winding on to a mandrel coated with a curable plastic e.g. epoxy-resin, at least two layers of filaments, e.g. of glass fibre, to form a double helical pattern, the winding angle being such, e.g. 88 degrees to the axis of rotation, that the cylinder so formed contributes substantially solely hoop strength to the pressure vessel when an integral part thereof. Domed end caps 2, having orifices 9, and moulded of glass cloth and epoxy-resin are bonded with resin one to each end of the cylinder 1. A metal endring 3 having a thickened rim 11 at one end and a flange 12 at the other is bonded centrally to each end cap. The whole structure is then cured and forms a hollow mandrel which may be rotated and upon which is wound at least two layers of filament to form a double helical pattern and at such a winding angle i.e. not greater than 55 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the mandrel, that the outer plastic layer 4 when an integral part of the pressure vessel contributes the remainder of its required strength, and impregnating the layers with curable resin and integrally uniting by curing the inner shell 1 and the outer plastic layer 4. Further, the inner surface of the pressure vessel and the end caps 2 may have linings 5, 6 of a resilient material, e.g. neoprene.
