Abstract
929,995. Cutting box blanks. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 20, 1959 [Nov. 21, 1958], No. 37587/58. Class 31(1). A multi-station plant comprises a means driving machinery at a main work station, and driving through a unidirectional coupling other machinery at a following work station, while a workpiece proceeds from the main station to the following station, where it is subjected to a different operation, an auxiliary drive being provided to increase the speed at the following station as compared with the normal speed of the plant. The plant shown for producing box blanks from a cardboard web comprises a main electric motor MM which is provided with speed control means TG and drives through a gear-box G 1 a double-facer DF for continuously facing corrugated web, and also drives a slitter SL through a uni-directional clutch CL, and a gear-box G 2 . A transverse cutter TC is driven from a gear-box G 3 through a similar uni-directional clutch CL 2 and a gearbox G 4 . A separate drive for the slitter comprises an electric motor MS connected to the gear-box G 3 through an automatic clutch TC 1 . A separate drive for the transverse cutter comprises an electric motor MTC connected to the gear-box G 4 through a similar automatic clutch TC 2 . To allow for changing the blank dimension, a severing cutter is arranged after the double-facer DF. Normally, the motors MS and MTC are de-energized and the motor MM drives the double-facer, slitter and transverse cutter in synchronism. When changing of the blank dimension is desired, the continuity of the web is interrupted by the severing cutter, the speed of the motor MM is reduced to its minimum speed and the motors MS, MTC started, to take over the drive of the slitter and transverse cutter. A gap is thereby formed between the double-facer and the slitter and transversecutter stations which allows the slitter blades to be adjusted. Then the motor MS is deenergized and as soon as the speed of the slitter decreases to the creep speed at which the doublefacer is still operating, the slitter is again driven by the motor MM while the transverse cutter may continue to cut blanks from the severed web portion. When this portion has been exhausted, the motor MTC is de-energized and the speed of the transverse cutter falls until it is again driven by the motor MM. When all these stations are thus recoupled together, the motor MM can be accelerated again to the desired working speed.
