Abstract

929,834. Copying lathes. V. SALOME, and C. SALOME. July 29, 1960 [July 30, 1959], No. 26439/60. Class 83 (3). A copying lathe is provided with control means operated by a single feeler for longitudinal movement of a carriage and transverse movement of a tool-slide thereon, so that the feed of the tool may be regulated continuously in both directions. The lathe comprises a chuck 1, Fig. 1, and a tailstock 2 supporting a workpiece 13. An assembly of three tool-carriages for non- copying work is mounted in the lower part of the machine and a copying device 4 is positioned above the work. The copying device comprises a longitudinal carriage 5 moving on guides 6 driven by an hydraulic ram 7, the cylinder of which is fixed to the frame and the piston-rod attached to the carriage 5. The transverse tool-carrying slide 9 is movable on vertical guides on the carriage 5 and is moved by an hydraulic copying device 10 including a ram 16, Fig. 4, for moving the slide, the piston-rod 17 of which is fixed to the slide. The tool 12 may follow the contour of a template 14 mounted on the frame above the carriage 5. A feeler 20 being provided for scanning the template. The feeler is carried by a rocker arm 18, Fig. 3, the axis 19 of which lies in a plane parallel to the vertical plane through the lathe axis but inclined to the directions of longitudinal and transverse feed. The end of the rocker opposite the feeler carries an adjustable tappet 21 which operates the transverse feed distributing piston valve 43 through a ball 42. The latter is under control of an hydraulic member 74 which may be hand-adjusted and moves the ball sideways automatically to give a copying rough-cut, the ball being brought to the centre position for the final finish-copying cut. The piston valve 43 connects with a booster 45 and a distributing valve 49 for the longitudinal feed movement. Two electromagnetic valves 63, 69 are included in the control arrangement and thermostatic throttle valves 50, 51 provide for viscosity changes in the fluid system. The longitudinal slide 5 carries a rocker 30 which on contacting stops 32, 33, adjustable on a fixed part of the machine, stops or reverses the feed. Two arms on the rocker are connected by wires 37, 38, to operate a valve control lever 73. Exchangeable cam bars 41 may be clamped to a stationary part of the machine to operate a rocker 39 to give rapid longitudinal movements to the carriage 5. A lever 23 projects from the end of the copying device 10 on the tool-slide and a roller on its end is adapted to contact one of a series of stops 28 on an automatically indexible drum 26. The latter is mounted on the carriage 5 and the stops act to limit the downward movement of the tool-slide so that a number of automatic traverses for roughing may be taken prior to the final copying cuts. Switch gear on the drum conditions a control circuit for the electrically operated valves.
