Abstract

929,352. Handling radioactive material. PYE Ltd. Oct. 28, 1960 [Oct. 29, 1959]. No. 36761/59. Class 39 (4). A viewing device employed in conjunction with a master and slave type manipulator is mounted for movement in dependence upon movement of the slave portion of the manipulator so that it always views the tongs or other manipulating part of the slave portion. The viewing device may be a television camera, a cine camera or a periscope. As shown in Fig. 1 the tongs 5a of a slave arm 5 situated behind a shield 2 are viewed by a television camera 6 mounted on a universal joint 7, the camera being coupled to the arm by a telescopic rod 9 whereby it is moved. The picture is reproduced on a monitor cathode-ray tube 8 whereby it can be seen by the operator controlling the master arm 4. Movement of the rod 9 also adjusts the focus of the camera. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the camera is moved electrically by signals derived from potentiometers controlled by the joints of the master arm 4. Specification 873,077 is referred to.
