A driving and control mechanism for power - operated machine tools having a slide or work-table operated by means of an hydraulic cylinder comprises hydraulic fluid on one side of the piston in the cylinder for moving the slide in the non-working direction and an enclosed volume of gas on the other side for effecting slide movement in a working direction. Slide 3 is connected to a piston-rod 1 in a cylinder 2, air is supplied to the cylinder from an air receiver 4 connected to a compressor 4a, and hydraulic fluid is supplied to the other end of the cylinder by a motor-driven pump 6 via a valve 20, and a non-return valve 25. A back pressure control shuttle valve 5 has a shuttle 7 having an aperture 9 which can be aligned with a port 10, and reduced diameter ends 11, 14 of the shuttle are connected to the hydraulic fluid, and the air, respectively. In operation, with port 10 closed by shuttle 7, pump 6 supplies fluid to oil space 13, and slide 3 is moved to the right, Fig. 1, against the air pressure. The slide contacts a switch 22, which cuts out pump 6, the air pressure on the end 14 of shuttle 7 is relieved, and the oil pressure on end 11 moves the shuttle to open port 10. Slide 3 is moved quickly to the left, controlled by a speed control valve 16, and the oil is discharged through a pipe 26 to a reservoir 23. A projection 19 engages a switch 18 which actuates a stroke limit control valve 17, to apply full air pressure to end 14, tending to close shuttle 7, against the rising back pressure acting on end 11, and retard the slide. The slide is cushioned due to a restriction 24 in the oil line. Shuttle 7 may be controlled by hydraulic pressure derived from a pump, or if air is used, this may be supplied by a separate pump.
