Abstract

The invention comprises ketones of formula R-CO-(CH2)10-CH2X where R is C1-5 alkyl and X is chlorine or bromine. They are prepared by passing a current of carbon dioxide through a vigorously agitated mixture of a solution of a 1-(C1-5 alkyl) cyclododecanol in an inert solvent and an aqueous solution of alkali metal hypochlorite or hypobromite at 20-25 DEG C. in the absence of actinic light. 1-Hydroxy-12-tridecanone is obtained by treating 1-chloro-12-tridecanone with sodium acetate in acetic acid followed by saponification. 1-Methylcyclododecanol is prepared by the action of methyl magnesium iodide on cyclododecanone.
