Abstract
Hydrogen cyanide is produced by maintaining a bed of electrically conductive carbon particles in a fluidized state in a reaction furnace by passing upwards through the bed a gas comprising a mixture of ammonia, a hydrocarbon gas and hydrogen at a volume ratio to NH3 of at least 0,25:1, and passing an electric current between electrodes through the bed with sufficient power to maintain the bed at 1300 DEG -1600 DEG C. sufficient to maintain reaction to form hydrogen cyanide. The hydrocarbon may be methane, ethane, propane, a butane, a pentane and/or a hexane. The hydrogen may be separated from the reaction products and recycled. Specification 854,268 is referred to.
