Abstract

An abrasive cylinder, for a vegetable cleaning or peeling machine, is made from a sheet of fibrous inorganic material, such as asbestos, coated with a moisture, acid and alkali resistant adhesive, spirally wound on a mandrel, and finally coated with abrasive grains. After rolling into cylindrical form, the sheet is coated with adhesive, preferably the same as that used in forming the cylinder, and is rotated in a mass of abrasive. A further coating of adhesive may be applied and the roll then rotated rapidly to throw off any excess. The adhesive may be a phenol-formaldehyde resin or a phenol-urea or epoxy resin which is curable at room temperature.
