Abstract

A self-supporting heat and pressure-moulded insulating material characterized by a specific resistance of at least 103 ohm. cm., a mechanical strength greater than natural graphite and resistance to attack by acids and alkalis comprises an aggregate, pressure-moulded under conditions preventing or inhibiting lateral spreading of the moulded substance and under substantially solvent-free conditions, and comprising at least 35% by weight of graphite particles predominantly finer than 76 microns and the majority of the individual particles each having a lower overall anisotropy than a single crystal of graphite, and as a binder therefor at least 40% by weight of a chemically resistant, normally solid, thermoplastic resin not having a definite melting point, the anisotropy of the macro-structure of the total compacted aggregate not exceeding the limits corresponding to a preferential crystallographic orientation of the crystallites of not more than 30%, the degree of orientation in the material being defined in terms of the distribution of 002 planes in all possible angular positions. Suitable graphite particles are derived from waste graphite powder of synthetic origin. Resins specified are polymers of halo-hydrocarbons, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polytrifluoromonochloroethylene and polytetrafluoroethylene. The material may be used in the construction of chemical apparatus or as an electrode holder, e.g. in conjunction with the conducting material of Specification 928,351. Composite moulded bodies comprising an insulating material and a conducting material are described both in Specification 928,351 and the present Specification which disclaims matter claimed in the former. Specification 608,618 also is referred to.
