Abstract

A cosmetic preparation comprises a non-toxic stable creamy base the constituents of which are acid stable and unreactive towards dihydroxy acetone and from 0.5-20% by weight of dihydroxy acetone said cosmetic preparation having a pH upon compounding and after at least six months of between 2.5-6.0 and being free from compounds containing active amino groups. The creamy base may comprise an acid buffer and a lipid water emulsion or gel. Specified lipids are lanolin, fatty acid esters, e.g. glyceryl monostearate or propylene glycol stearate, gums, polyethylene glycol ether-fatty alcohol complex, "dewaxed lanolin oil" or "acetylated lanolin." The gel may result from the reaction between carboxy polymethylene and less than an equivalent amount of an aliphatic amine, e.g. diisopropanolamine. Specified acid buffers are tartrates, citrates, citric acid, phosphates or acetates. Other additives include wetting-agents, e.g. fatty acid esters of poloxyethylene sorbitan and sorbitan fatty acid esters such as sorbitan monostearate, sorbitan sesquioleate and poloxyethylene sorbitan monostearate; preservatives, e.g. methyl and propyl paraben; sun-screening agents, e.g. salicylates and cinnamates such as homomenthyl salicylate and 2-ethoxyethyl p-methoxy cinnamic acid; methyl polysiloxane; cetyl alcohol; polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol.
