Abstract

927,712. Evaporators. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Feb. 7, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1961], No. 6121/61. Class 29. An evaporator assembly 10 incorporates an accumulator 24 and has a primary passage 20 leading to an inlet 26 to the accumulator intermediate its upper and lower ends, and a secondary passage 34 connecting the lower end 36 of the accumulator to another inlet 38 in the latter below the intermediate connection 26, but above the lower end of the accumulator. In a refrigeration system as shown, Fig. 2, primarily for an ice cream or frozen food cabinet, refrigerant is pumped from a compressor 14 through a condenser 16, a receiver 52, a shut-valve 50, and a capillary tube 18, to the evaporator inlet 22. Some liquid refrigerant evaporates in the primary passage 20, which is of copper tube soldered to a metal storage container, and the liquid and vapour mixture enters the cylindrical accumulator 24 at the inlet 26. The liquid collects in the accumulator and in the lower passes of the secondary passage 34, also soldered to the metal container, while the vapour passes from the upper end of the accumulator, which may contain a liquid refrigerant separator 54 formed of rolls of corrugated metal strip between concentric cylinders (Fig. 4, not shown) or of perforated expanded metal, to return to the compressor. The passes of the secondary passage 34 may be horizontal as shown, or may slope gradually upwards towards the inlet 38, and bubbles of refrigerant vapour formed in the passage serve to pump a liquid and vapour mixture up to the inlet 38 to separate in the accumulator. An alternative form of evaporator, Fig. 5, is formed as a single roll-bonded panel, the small parallel passages 66 serving as the liquid refrigerant separator 54.
