Abstract
927,639. Sucker-rod elevators. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Jan. 8, 1960 [Jan. 19, 1959], No. 801/60. Class 78 (4). In a sucker-rod elevator of the kind comprising a body 1 having trunnions 5, pivoted in a bail 6 supported on a rising and falling hook, and a rod-insertion slot 2 leading to a seat for the enlargement 15 of the sucker-rod 14, the seat is designed to have universal joint contact with the enlargement to prevent kinking of the sucker-rod due to the body 1 tipping about the trunnion axis. Such tipping is prevented by arranging the trunnion axis offset relatively to the centre line of the body, so that, in use, the body 1 is permanently tipped to the extent permitted by the contact of abutments 12 with the sides of the bail 6. The seat 20 is cut away so that the enlargement is supported only at two diametrically-opposite zones. The sucker-rod is retained in the slot 2 by known spring-operated members 23 released by fingers 24, 27. The body 1 is reversible, having a seat on both sides. When the body is standing on the rig floor, the bail may be upright, resting against the stops 12, or may be swung away from the stops to rest on the floor.
